“How many days do I need?” is one of the most useful questions to answer early, because it shapes your budget, your route and how much you’ll actually see. There’s no single right answer, but there are sensible guidelines. Here’s how we think about it.
The short answer
For most first-time visitors, five to seven days is the sweet spot: long enough to reach two or three of Kenya’s best areas and spend real time on game drives, without rushing. If you only have a day or two, you can still get a genuine taste of safari close to Nairobi. If you have ten days or more, you can add the northern reserves or the coast.
By trip length
One day: a taste of safari
Short on time, on a layover, or adding safari to a business trip? A day trip delivers a real game drive without an overnight. Our Nairobi National Park Day Safari gets you rhino, lion and giraffe with the city skyline behind them, and our day tours to Lake Naivasha and Hell’s Gate add boat rides and walking safaris. It’s not a full safari, but it’s a real one.
Two to three days: a focused short break
With a couple of nights, you can commit to one reserve and actually settle into it. This is ideal for the Masai Mara, where two full days of game drives give you a strong chance at the big cats and, in season, the migration. See our Masai Mara Short Break. A short break keeps travel time down and cost lower, while still feeling like a proper safari.
Four to six days: the sweet spot
This is where most travelers land, and for good reason. Four to six days lets you link two or three complementary areas. For example, rhino country at Lake Nakuru, a boat safari on Lake Naivasha, and two full days in the Masai Mara, all without spending your holiday on the road. Our Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha & Masai Mara circuit is built exactly around this length.
Seven to ten days: the fuller picture
With a week or more you can add Amboseli (elephants beneath Kilimanjaro), Samburu (unique northern wildlife), or finish on the coast at Diani. This suits travelers making a long-haul trip who want variety and a slower pace. See our honeymoon Bush to Beach Romance and Savannah Elegance Escape.
Ten days and beyond: the grand circuit
If time allows, a longer trip lets you cover Kenya’s full range in one seamless route. Our 11-Day Grand Circuit takes in the Mara, the Rift Valley lakes, Samburu and Amboseli, the most complete introduction to the country’s landscapes and wildlife.
What actually decides the right length
- How far you’re travelling. If you’ve flown long-haul to get here, it’s worth staying long enough to justify the journey. A two-day safari after a 12-hour flight can feel rushed.
- Your budget. More days means more park fees, accommodation and guiding. A focused shorter trip can be excellent value.
- First-timer or returning. First-timers often want breadth (several parks), while returning guests often prefer depth (more time in one favourite area).
- Your pace. Long transfers between parks eat into game-drive time. We’d rather give you two unhurried days in the Mara than half a day each in four places.
Our honest advice
If we could offer one rule of thumb: spend at least two full days wherever the wildlife is best (usually the Masai Mara), and resist the urge to cram in one more park. A well-paced six-day trip almost always beats a hurried ten-day one. Tell us your dates and what you most want to see, and we’ll suggest a length and route that fits, with no padding.
